How To Prepare For Your Fly Fishing Wade Trip
You’re about to embark on an adventure. Please be sure to read through this page in its entirety before your trip. Forgetting to bring polarized sunglasses can ruin your chance of catching trout, so please… be prepared.
Licensing and Permits for Fishing in New York State
Fishing License - Please Obtain Prior to Arrival
You will need to procure a NY State fishing license. Day licenses are $5 for New York residents, $10 for out-of-state. Yearly licenses are $25 for New York residents, $50 for non-residents. If you are getting a day license, please note that they are not transferrable to another day. It’s unwise to secure your day license too far ahead of time as weather could impact your trip. Wait until your guide confirms conditions before purchase.
Licenses may be purchased online here
DEP Access Permit
If you’re asked by your guide to obtain a free access permit to DEP recreational lands , please click here.
Gear
Rod and flies are provided free-of-charge with all trips. If you need to rent waders, please pay in advance here. $35 per angler. If bringing your own rod you’ll want something in range of 8-10’ & 4-6 weight class. The standard 9’ 5 weight is generally perfect for the Esopus Creek.
How to Dress for Your Fly Fishing Trip
A few important items to have and rules to follow:
Polarized Sunglasses
Brimmed Hat
No bright colors
Dress in layers. There is a cold water influx to the Esopus, so water is often cold even when ambient temps are high.
Socks
Sunscreen
Food
Guides provide water and snacks to all guests. You are welcome to bring additional food. Half-day trips do not stop for lunch unless the client wants to do so.
Safety
If you have any mobility or health issues that may impact your ability to access the river, please let your guide know well in advance of the day of your trip. Don’t forget to mention concerns like allergies to insect bites or stings. New York State licensed guides are not legally allowed to administer any medication or injections, but may carry the items for you.
Payment
The balance due for your trip should be paid to your guide directly via cash or Venmo only on the day of your trip. Tipping your fly fishing guide is customary.
Where to Meet
Your guide will confirm meeting place ahead of your trip. We usually fish The Esopus or Schoharie above their reservoirs.
