John Burroughs
A Catskill Angler
John Burroughs, noted naturalist and author, lived and loved the Catskill Mountains from his birth in 1837 until his death in 1921. His well published prose paired with the requisite skills of mountain living granted him the archetypal mystique of "the great American outdoorsman." Nature writing based on thorough and consumed observation was a key component of the formula for Burroughs' success. A success that fostered the good friendship of Henry Ford who gifted Burroughs several cars over the course of their relationship. With quicker access to ever distant locales, Burroughs hunted and fished his way across the region. Active at a time when the sport of fly fishing was being forever changed by the anglers of The Catskills, Burroughs enjoyed a unique perspective on the history of sport fishing in America. John Burroughs, A Catskill Angler, explores the people and places which informed the piscatorial worldview of one of our country's most beloved naturalists.
